Summit Aviation’s new 100,000 sq ft purpose
built Engine Overhaul facility is due for completion in
July 2008.
01 November 2007.
JT8D-200 Tooling Delivery
Summit Aviation has now taken delivery of a full
suite of JT8D-200 overhaul tooling. The tools arrived
from Finland this week after the national airline
completed their last JT8D rebuild. The tools are now
going through an exhaustive check and reburbish process
whist the company continue with the building of the new
100,000 sqft facility.
The company plan to be fully approved on the
JT8D-200 in the new year following staff
training.
Summit Aviation has also procured Finnair’s
JT8D-200 material inventory.
McDonnell Douglas - MD-80
The MD-80, a quiet, fuel-efficient twinjet, was
certified by the Federal Aviation Administration in
August 1980 and entered airline service in October 1980.
Its Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 engines, combined with
its efficient aerodynamic design, allowed the MD-80 to
meet all current noise regulations while producing
operating costs among the lowest in commercial
aviation.
Pratt & Whitney have a continuing ongoing
commitment. Together with Aviation Fleet Solutions (AFS),
they received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
certification on the QuietEagle, the noise reduction
system for JT8D-200-powered MD-80 aircraft.
The system meets all the requirements of FAR
Part 36 Stage 4 and International Civil Aviation
Organization's (ICAO) Annex 16 Chapter 4 noise standards,
which became effective Jan. 1, 2006. Pratt & Whitney
designed the QuietEagle noise reduction system and AFS
obtained the FAA certification.
Hardware will be available in the second quarter
of 2006. "The QuietEagle system reduces cumulative noise
by up to six dB," said Kimberley Sullivan, JT8D program
manager with Pratt & Whitney. "As more and more
European Union countries and airports implement more
stringent noise restrictions that result in landing
charges for the MD-80, we have a solution."
The system includes an improved front fan
containment case, a 16-lobe mixer, a muffler, and a
tabbed nozzle. Installation typically can be completed
on-wing in 160 man-hours.
"The QuietEagle package will extend the useful
life of the JT8D-200 fleet while maintaining thrust and
performance levels," Sullivan said. "It is another
example of Pratt & Whitney's initiatives to extend
the life of existing products through technology
insertion."
04th April 2008.
Summit Aviation post audits from the CAA &
FAA and proudly received its JT8D-200 series EASA 145
& FAA 145 approval.
There is now the promise of future
expansion.
Engine test cells
Summit Aviation has added a major new element to
the facilities it offers to its customers by the
acquisition of an engine test cell at Gloucester
Airport.
Originally owned by Lucas Aerospace, the
Gloucester Cell was only capable of testing Pratt &
Whitney JT3 engines, as used in DC8 and Boeing 707
airliners.
Apart from some military applications, these
engines are now almost obsolete, and the number being
sent to Gloucester for testing was rapidly dwindling
.
Summit has made a major investment to bring the
Cell up to the CAA required standard for testing the more
modern JT8 engines. This type of engine is the
“workhorse” of many airliner fleets, and will be in
service for decades to come.
Summit signed its first Exclusive GTA contract
with Nordic Airways for JT8D-200 series support in April
‘08.
