Aerospace
coatings
Major names in aerospace coatings are Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings, Henkel
Aerospace, PPG coatings and Permagard Aviation.
The hot news in the industry is the 'green' aircraft exterior paint system.
Surface pre-treatments include PreKote surface pre-treatment, Permagard protective
coating treatments. Developments in aircraft interior coatings include Clouth wood veneer
finishes.
The ‘green’ system is manufactured by Sherwin-Williams, and has been tested and
approved by Dassault Engineering. The new environmentally friendly chrome free and metal free paint delivers
outstanding results.
The system is comprised of PreKote, a Surface Treatment, Chrome free Primer /
Surfacer, Jet Glo Express (high solids, low VOC) and Top Coat, JETEX. This system is a big step toward
European environmental targets and has an improved performance over multiple substrates.
Sherwin-Williams Aerospace has introduced a new wash primer that has
been designed for pretreatment of aluminium and is a highly corrosion-resistant
coating.
Two-component wash primers are designed to work with both chromated and chrome free
urethane primers and meets SAE’s AMS 3095, approved for use on both Boeing and Airbus aircraft. It’s designed
to inhibit corrosion, and is ideal for use in aerospace paint systems where chemical resistance and high
flexibility are necessary.
Aerospace fire retardant
coatings
The CLOU system of fire retardant lacquers has been developed by the wood veneer
specialist Alfred Clouth Lackfabrik GmbH & Co. KG. Wood veneers had previously been a fire hazard in
aircraft, but much desired for VIP interiors. Applying clear
wood protecting lacquers required a flame retardant agent that contained halogens, but when the wood caught
fire it released caustic hydrochloric acid when extinguished. The wood veneer specialist has developed a
halogen-free lacquer that not only protects the wafer-thin veneer from scratches and gives it a fine gloss,
but at the same time contains a unique flame resistant protection.
Luxury aircraft can now have real wood veneers finished to a fine gloss that not only
look stunning but comply with aviation standards.
Aerospace Material Specification 3095A Approval.
Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings manufacture the Jet Glo Express™ system. Both the
chromated primer and chrome free primer/surfacer have been approved as part of the system. Sherwin-Williams
is one of the first major aviation industry paint and coatings suppliers to achieve AMS certification for a
chrome free system.
3095A approval specifically covers high gloss paints for use on civil aircraft. All
coating products and systems that receive AMS 3095A certification have undergone stringent testing.
Commercial airlines and MRO facilities are the target customers for these products.
They protect the plane, boost an airline’s brand image.
High quality coatings last longer, stay more vivid and offer easy maintenance and
repair.
Jet Glo Express not only ensures an ultra high gloss finish, but with a cure time of
typically 8 to 10 hours and ease of mixing and application, down time is reduced.
Chrome-Free Primers.
Chrome-free epoxy primers by Sherwin-Williams can be used
as both corrosion primers and surfacers.
Aerospace coatings distributors within the industry seek AS9120 quality standard
approval.
The approval involves twice yearly audits
