SIFCO Applied Surface Concepts (UK) Limited are specialists in the selective brush plating
industry. For over 30 years the company have been offering selective plating equipment, solutions and plating
services to many different industries.
SIFCO two years ago moved into their new European Headquarters factory at Bromsgrove,
Worcestershire. From this base they are able to service their many customers by offering selective plating
services either at their factory or at the customers’ premises.
Due to its’ portability and flexibility, the SIFCO process is able to be used in many
industries, applications and situations. Because it is selective plating, it is more environmentally friendly
than traditional tank plating. It uses less solutions and materials, takes less time, due to the fact you are
only plating the required area, and saves you money.
Recently SIFCO were audited and passed their re-accreditation for ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100
part B anodising with no non-conformances. This was due to the stringent quality practices that SIFCO have
put into place since relocating to their new premises in Bromsgrove.
Aerospace
plating… The Selective
Advantage
The SIFCO Process is a
portable selective plating method of selectively, brush electroplating localised areas without having to use
an immersion tank. The ability for plating components on-site or at our factory gives this brush plating
process a huge advantage over tank electroplating. Another huge advantage is that in most cases the part
which requires plating does not have to be removed or stripped down. The technique has been engineered and enhanced
by continuous research and development at SIFCO Applied Surface Concepts.
Over 100 pure metals and
alloys are available for plating using the SIFCO Process. In addition, five types of anodizing as well as aerospace
electropolishing can be accomplished using the same SIFCO Process techniques. Again in contrast to tank plating,
the SIFCO Process does not require expensive masking, special fixtures or elaborate equipment.
Brush plated SIFCO Process
deposits have excellent adhesion and can be selectively plated at rates that are 30 to 60 times faster than
conventional tank plating. Quality of deposits and adhesion to base materials are, as a whole, equivalent or
superior to that which may be attained using good tank plating practices.
Damage repair from wear,
corrosion or mis-machining can be achieved by SIFCO Process plating, anodizing, hard coating, or electropolishing
solutions. Wear resistant deposits, low electrical contact resistance or corrosion protection can all be applied
selectively to improve components that have been manufactured from inexpensive base metals.
The process can be used in
many different applications within many different industries such as:
Aerospace – landing gear
cad plating, aircraft bodywork repair (anodising), corrosion protection, nickel plating for pre-braze, surface
enhancement, refurbishment, copper plating, nickel plating, hard anodising, nickel alloys, selective cadmium
plating, zinc-nickel LHE plating.
Oil & Gas – Silver
plating of sealant surfaces, Nickel plating of bores, copper plating of threads, nickel plating of shafts, plating
repairs, corrosion protection, surface enhancement
Power Generation – Silver
plating of copper bus bars, Silver plating of Aluminium bus bars, nickel plating of shafts, plating to improve
corrosion protection, electrical contact improvement, wear resistance, anti-galling on threads
The process is also
written into many blue chip manufacturers’ specifications such as BAE spec, Rolls-Royce spec, Messier Dowty,
Goodrich, Pratt & Whitney, Sikorsky and many others.
Several different types of
solution can be selective plated onto components such as Gold, Silver, Bronze, Nickel, copper, Cadmium, Zinc Nickel
LHE, Nickel, Cobalt, Nickel Cobalt, Indium, Iron, Tin-lead, Palladium, Platinum, Rhodium, Tin, Cobalt, Aero-Nickel,
Type 1 Chromic Anodising, Type II Sulphuric Anodising, Type III HardCoat Anodising and more.
Due to the portability of
the process, it is possible for SIFCO to visit your site to carry out on-site component repairs where
required.
Alternatively they have a
workshop with qualified engineers who can carry out the plating in Bromsgrove, reducing turnaround times for
repairs or aircraft new part enhancement. This is important in the Aircraft repair industry where tight windows of
turnaround time are in place. SIFCO can respond at short notice to attend your site and carry out the necessary
plating without major strip downs being required in most cases.
