Aircraft variable-pitch propeller overhaul
Variable-pitch propellers AND FEATHERING OF PROPELLERS are designed to provide good performance and economical
operation over a range of aircraft speeds, propellers fitted to many aircraft have the capability of varying their
pitch (the angle at which the blade meets the oncoming air) in flight. Varying the pitch is very much like changing
gear in a car. Fine pitch is similar to low gear, giving good acceleration at low forward speed, and is used during
take-off and climb. Coarse pitch is similar to top gear, giving economical operation at high speeds. If the
propeller pitch is controlled automatically, an engine can be operated at constant speed. This is ideal for
turbo-prop engines, since they operate most efficiently in a narrow speed range. Moving the throttles on such a
system increases the power setting of the engines, but the engine speed does not increase because the propeller
pitch is automatically coarsened to absorb the extra power. In simpler arrangements, the propeller pitch is
controlled manually, either over a continuous range or perhaps between two settings, fine and coarse.
If an engine fails, the propeller will windmill, taking energy from the air stream and turning the engine. This
causes extra drag, and may further damage the engine, so the propeller is feathered - the blade pitch is changed
until the blades sit approximately in line with the air stream, and windmilling is prevented.
