Aerospace NDT Technical Information

Non-Destructive testing involves checking the integrity of major load bearing metallic assemblies and structures without destroying the fitness for use of the component. These checks are usually carried out at the points of greatest stress e.g. at welded or bolted connections etc. using a combination of one or all of the following inspection methods:

a) ultrasonic inspection

b) eddy current inspection

c) magnetic particle inspection

d) dye penetrant inspection

e) radiographic inspection

f) engine boroscope inspection

A brief description of the main Non-Destructive testing inspection techniques:
(Note: the word "Inspection" in the context of NDT means the examination of a component to establish conformity with an approved standard.)

1. ULTRASONIC Inspection
Ultrasonic contact inspection using ‘A’ scan pulse-echo techniques and phase array for the detection of surface and internal flaws, and for the accurate measurement of material thickness.

2. EDDY CURRENT Inspection
Examination of conductive materials using High Frequency and Low Frequency Eddy current techniques.

3. MAGNETIC PARTICLE Inspection
The detection of surface and sub-surface defects in Ferro-magnetic materials by fluorescent magnetic processes, using current-flow coil and electromagnetic yoke techniques.

4. DYE PENETRANT Inspection
The detection of ‘surface breaking’ flaws in non-ferrous and non-magnetic ferrous alloys, using Fluorescent penetrant (in suspension) techniques.

5. RADIOGRAPHY Inspection
The examination of structures and components, using X-ray techniques up to 150KV.

6. ENGINE BOROSCOPE Inspection
The visual inspection of the interior of aircraft engines using a boroscope.
