Landing Gear supports an aeroplane on the ground and absorbs vertical shocks on take off and particularly, landing. The main part is a shock absorbing strut, comprising a piston and cylinder, like a very large bicycle pump.
The cylinder is filled with high pressure nitrogen and hydraulic oil.
The Nitrogen acts as a spring and resists the piston being forced into the cylinder, contracting and expanding in response to external forces.
Movement of the piston in the cylinder forces the hydraulic oil to flow through restricting orifices and slow the movement, removing any violent changes and making the movements comfortable for the passengers.
Typically, there are two or more large units (Main Landing Gears) in the middle of the aircraft, which are capable of supporting the full weight of the Aircraft; and a smaller one; at the front (Nose Landing Gear) basically intended to support the aircraft with its cabin floor horizontal whilst on the ground.
The Nose Landing Gear is a standard two wheel gear assembly, which absorbs take-off and landing forces of the aircraft. The gear also steers the aircraft and supports the weight of the forward section of the aircraft while the aircraft is on the ground. The major components of the NLG are
a) A shock strut with integral axle to attach the wheels and brakes
b) Top and bottom torsion links
c) Steering Actuator fittings
d) Trunnion Mounting components
e) Hydraulic and Electrical systems
Operation
The shock strut is the main part of the nose landing gear assembly; it absorbs the landing forces of the aircraft and transmits the vertical loads to the structure of the aircraft. The trunnion mounting components permit load transfer from shock strut through the trunnion’s to the internal structure of the aircraft.
The torsion links keep the radial alignment of the inner cylinder of the shock strut and the steering collar. The steering actuator fittings attach the rod end of the steering actuators to the steering collar and by hydraulic pressure steer the aircraft.

BODY LANDING GEAR (B747)
Description
The Body Landing Gear comprises of the same major components as the Main Landing Gear and performs the same role.
Operation
One difference is the Body Landing steering provide directional control during towing and taxiing of the airplane. The steering functions through a closed loop electronics system which establishes positions of the body trucks corresponding to a relative position of the nose gear. As the Nose Landing Gear turns in one direction, the body gear turns smaller proportional angles in the other direction. Body gear steering reduces scrubbing effect on the tires while manoeuvring on the ground.
The Body Landing Gears are located and support the fuselage.
Among the companies providing landing gear repair are
SR Technics to provide MRO on Oman Air B737s landing gear
Oman Air signed an agreement with SR Technics to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul services (MRO) on the landing gear assembly on its B737NG fleet.
Abdullah Bin Burham Ba Omar Sr Manager - Planning & Production Control said, “In aviation, the undercarriage or landing gear is the structures (usually wheels) that supports an aircraft and allows it to move across the surface of the Earth when it is not flying. Airplanes require landing gear for taxiing, takeoff, and landing. Aircraft’s landing gear is, of course, essential to safety and requires regular maintenance and repair.”
“Initially the contract will cover six aircraft that will be due at different timings starting from fist quarter of 2009 until the last quarter of 2011. To facilitate the overhaul schedule programme SRT will provide to Oman Air a loan set of landing gear assembly during the phase of the overhaul work. The overhaul work of the landing gears will be carried out at SRT facility located at Dublin Airport, Ireland. It is worth mentioning that this agreement will also provide the necessary training requirements and any other required expertise to Oman Air Engineering personnel to carry out the removal and installation of the lading gears from B737NG fleet,” he further added.
